Connie Mims: Music

Maybe By Topeka

(Connie Mims)
2008-01-15
C. Mims/Pandulce Music, BMI; G. Payne/Gordon Payne Music, BMI
This song started out as a writing exercise from NSAI, asking us to do a song with landmarks or cities. I took some poor heart broken lass from Baltimore to Topeka, using MapQuest to link her destination from her starting point!

The girls at the office threw me a bash
We drank margaritas, got a card with some cash saying, “Bon Voyage, here’s something for a rainy day”
I guess the whole thing the last few years is the sofa, TV, baby, bring me a beer
I can’t live my life that way
And I just keep driving on, wonderin’ why I stayed so long
And I’m not sure just how I loved you so
Maybe, maybe, maybe by Topeka I’ll know

I priced all our stuff so it would sell, waved to the neighbors and I wished them well
So much for our happy home
I packed up the rest in my car, my granny square blanket, some coins in a jar
And photographs, oh, the stories that they could tell
And I just keep driving on, wonderin’ why I stayed so long
And I’m not sure just how I loved you so
Maybe, maybe, maybe by Topeka I’ll know

Living someone else’s dream is not the way it’s supposed to be
At least not for me
Heading into the big unknown is only scary when you’re going alone
I’ve got angels ridin’ here with me

I’ll pick up the interstate at the next right
Cryin’ and drivin’ and wonderin’ all night
Why can’t I get you off my mind
Maybe, maybe, maybe by Topeka I’ll know
